TUDOR Ranger Watches
The TUDOR Ranger collection embodies the spirit of adventure and resilience. Inspired by historical expedition watches, the collection offers a rugged design with clean lines and exceptional durability. Featuring an automatic movement and high functionality, each TUDOR Ranger watch is built to withstand extreme conditions while maintaining a classic, timeless style.
The Ranger saga
The history of the Ranger name dates back much further than the British North Greenland Expedition. Although the TUDOR watches worn by its members from 1952 to 1954 never bore the name on their dials, subsequent Ranger models perpetuated the concept of the expedition watch – a robust, practical and affordable instrument that was created by TUDOR during this time. The origins of the TUDOR Ranger family date back to the year 1929, when company founder Hans Wilsdorf registered the name “Ranger”. At this time, the name wasn’t used for a specific model, but rather to add a touch of adventurous flair to certain watches in the TUDOR collection. In fact, the design that we now recognise as a Ranger – with large luminescent Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock and uniquely designed hands – didn’t appear until the 1960s.
The spirit of a tool watch
The Ranger embodies the spirit of a tool watch, a type of watch appreciated for its functionality and reliability in extreme conditions. The combination of traditional aesthetic and modern technical elements, such as the high-performance in-house movement and the TUDOR “T fit” quick-adjust system, continues the tradition of the expedition watch that began with the Oyster Prince models worn by the members of the British North Greenland Expedition. This tradition of a robust, practical and affordable instrument is continued with the new Ranger model, which features a 39 millimetre case and satin-finished surface, to preserve the purest spirit of a tool watch. Certain elements, such as the inner edge of the bezel, are polished to visually highlight the lines of the case, while the dial with luminescent hour markers proudly wears the historical influence.
Technical innovations and the TUDOR Ranger calibre
The latest Ranger is equipped with the in-house MT5402 calibre, which is designed to ensure robustness, longevity, reliability and precision due to its variable-inertia balance, which is held in place by a sturdy traversing bridge with two points of fixation. Thanks to this balance and the non-magnetic silicon balance spring, the in-house MT5402 calibre has been certified as a chronometer by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), with its performance going beyond the standards set by this independent institute.
Another notable feature of the MT5402 calibre is its power reserve of around 70 hours, which enables the wearer to take the watch off over the weekend without having to wind it.
The variety of Ranger models
While the Ranger is known for its robust functionality and classic aesthetic, the model range offers fantastic variety with the different strap options, each of which offers a unique character and outstanding comfort. In addition to the fully satin-finished stainless-steel bracelet with the TUDOR “T fit” quick-adjust system, which allows the length of the bracelet to be adjusted instantly without tools, the Ranger is also available with an olive-green Jacquard fabric strap with red and beige stripes. The straps are manufactured by Julien Faure, a company located near Saint Étienne in France, using traditional Jacquard looms from the 19th century. This partnership, which has existed for over 10 years, highlights TUDOR’s commitment to combining craftsmanship and comfort. A third option is the strap made from natural rubber and textured black leather with beige decorative stitching, which offers an alternative look and a different feel when wearing the watch.
The spirit of adventure and the Ranger
The TUDOR Ranger is more than just a watch – it is a symbol of adventure and a pioneering spirit. Inspired by the brave souls that participated in the British North Greenland Expedition, the Ranger embodies the spirit of those that explore the unknown. The robust, practical and affordable nature of the Ranger watch makes it the ideal companion for any adventure – from the icy expanses of Greenland to the urban jungle. TUDOR’s philosophy of longevity and reliability, present throughout the entire history of the brand, is continued with the Ranger, a watch that stands out thanks to its robust design and functional features.
In short: the Ranger in the context of TUDOR’s legacy
The TUDOR Ranger is more than just a watch – it is a piece of history that has been transported into the modern world. With the introduction of this model, TUDOR honours the legacy of the adventurers and explorers who have inspired the brand since its beginnings.
