GEMSTONE SETTER
FEDERAL DIPLOMA OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING
TRAINING DURATION
4 years
SPECIALISATION
Jewellery and object design
PLACE OF WORK
Bucherer head office in Lucerne, stone-setting atelier
YOUR TRAINING AT BUCHERER
We offer an opportunity to immerse yourself in the exciting world of gemstones and brilliant diamonds. As a gemstone setter, you will work closely with goldsmiths and produce pieces of jewellery in precious metals (gold, platinum or silver) for our customers. This includes inserting gemstones into the prepared settings and shaping the precious metal. During your training period, you will incrementally learn the craftsmanship skills needed to bring out the best in the precious stones. A particular challenge will be the setting of delicate gemstones or brilliant diamonds of small sizes. The precious stones must not be subjected to too much pressure in the process. At the same time, the settings must enclose in such a way that the stones do not fall out. You will work at a well-equipped workbench with a stereo microscope as well as fine and filigree tools such as cutters, drills, burins and pliers.
WHAT MAKES THE JOB ESPECIALLY EXCITING
The gemstone setter is a specialist profession in jewellery-making. The gemstones to be set are natural products, and each stone represents a rarity. There are diamonds and colour gemstones in all sizes and colours – no two are alike. They are very difficult to extract and therefore occur only rarely. These precious stones are set by hand because of their special characteristics such as hardness, fissility or brittleness. The end result is a sparkling and lively piece of jewellery that stirs emotions in everyone involved: in the goldsmith and gemstone setter, as it is a great privilege for them to produce such a unique piece, and of course in those who wear them, who often have a strong emotional attachment to their piece of jewellery.
